Protect Your (And Student) Privacy

When Using AI

Privacy: Protecting personal data and respecting user privacy.

Users need to be careful when inputting information into AI. No Personally Identifiable Information should be used in a chatbot. If using a chatbot to help with resume writing, reference letters, IEPs, HR documents, emails, or any other documents that could have PII in it, be sure to omit all PII before inserting into a chatbot.

Why? All information put into a chatbot that is learning from your information will retain all of the PII and could recall it up for someone else. It is now part of their database. We want to ensure we are using AI ethically and responsibly, therefore please omit all personal information of students and staff while you use the AI generator of your choice.

When choosing any tools to use with students, especially ones that may involve AI, we need to make sure that the tools are FERPA and COPPA compliant and DON'T collect student information. The tech department does allow some sites that students use their Google account to log into, however we need to be very careful what we allow. If you use a website that doesn't involve the students to sign in this is the best case scenario. No information will be captured and student's rights will be perserved.

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records, granting parents and eligible students (those 18 or older, or attending postsecondary institutions) the right to access, review, and request amendments to these records, as well as control over their disclosure

COPPA:

COPPA imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age.
